Physical & Health Education (PHE) Department

Physical Education develops students physically. Through an understanding of games concepts relating to their teammates and through self-expression, they grow intellectually and mature emotionally.  

 

Aims of Physical Education: 

·      Equip students with the skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities with understanding

·      Impart knowledge on how to develop and maintain physical fitness.

·      Develop positive self-esteem through body awareness and control

·      Encourage regular participation in physical activity

·      Impart an understanding of the implications and benefits of an involvement in physical activities. 

·      Enable students to observe safety skills and habits.

·      Develop the students’ appreciation of concepts of fairplay and good sportsmanship.

·      Develop students’ understanding and application of critical thinking skills to PE. 

 

Department Key Programmes

 

Students from P1 to P6 are exposed to various sports activities beyond the PE curriculum.  

Through experiential learning, students are given the opportunity to:

 

·      apply learned fundamental skills;

·      utilise physical activity as a tool to manage stress;

·      empower themselves by setting and working toward realistic individual goals;

·      participate in a motivating and nurturing environment resulting in a greater sense of well-being and self-esteem;

·      participate in active learning to stimulate continued inquiry about physical education, health and fitness.

 

3Cs Team Building

These team building activities are designed in alignment with the school’s core values – Commitment, Compassion and Cheerfulness (3Cs). We adopt a whole-school approach in the inculcation of the 3Cs. Team building activities for students are conducted at the beginning of the year for them to bond and get to know one another and to relate the values learned in the session to real-life situations.

SwimSafer
Students from P3 are involved in the Swim Safer programme. The programme aims to teach swimming proficiency and water survival skills to children to minimize drowning incidences.

Sports Education Programme (SEP)

The SEP aims to advocate the importance of sports ed`ucation, encourage sports participation in school and increase sporting opportunities in school.

·       P3    Design a Bookmark on Eye Care

·       P4    Design a Poster on Staying Smoke Free

·       P5    Design a Board Game - Applying Health Education knowledge (Health &
         Fitness, Safety, Balanced Diet & Hygiene)

·       P6    Stress Management - Making a De-Stress Ball

Department Strategies

 

The Physical Education programme in Canossa Convent Primary School aims to provide our students with an enjoyable learning environment while providing students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable and encourage them to participate in physical activities well into adulthood. 


The department adopts the SEEP approach in the delivery of PE lessons to achieve these goals:

Students have different levels of physical ability. Thus the school has been using an inclusive approach to PE through differentiated instruction to ensure that all students are given opportunities to work at a pace and level that is appropriate for them.

Students can then achieve small successes and enjoy the learning process. In an effort to enhance the learning experience in PE for all our students, CCPS has begun working with the Physical Education and Sports Teacher Academy (PESTA) from the Ministry of Education to further develop its differentiated instructional practices and strategies in PE for the benefit of all our students.
